Clinical Cultural Competence
Clinical Cultural Competence is recognized as a clinical competency for all medical students, residents and faculty by the following accreditation agencies: LMCE, ACGME, JCAHO.
Culture has a profound affect on the physician-patient relationship, compliance issues, and clinical outcomes. Therefore, it is important for the faculty of the College of Medicine to integrate discussion of these issues within their teaching, whether in the lecture hall or at the bedside.
The following information and teaching resources is a modest beginning. More resources will be added within the coming months. Meanwhile, questions and contributions can be asked or given to Carol Packard, who teaches cultural competences at the College of Medicine, and is developing this site.

ABSTRACT: Cultural competence has gained attention as a potential strategy to improve quality and eliminate racial/ethnic disparities in health care. In 2002 we conducted interviews with experts in cultural competence from managed care, government, and academe to identify their perspectives on the field. We present our findings here and then identify recent trends in cultural competence focusing on health care policy, practice, and education. Our analysis reveals that many health care stakeholders are developing initiatives in cultural competence. Yet the motivations for advancing cultural competence and approaches taken vary depending on mission, goals, and sphere of influence.
