Writing Letters of Reference
Information about writing the letter
Information to request from students
- Copy of their CV and personal statement.
- A cover letter that briefly explains their chosen specialty along with some possible career goals. The ERAS application program can also print out a cover sheet the student may choose to give to the letter writer.
- Clear instructions about whom the letter should be sent to, along with information about what the letter is in aid of and whether it is for a scholarship or a specific university program
- A definite deadline date. A good deadline to suggest is the first of October for the NRMP match using ERAS.
- A release in the Office of the Registrar permitting your faculty member to have access to your student file (do we do this?)
