MSP Admissions
About the Program The MD/MBA joint degree option is offered through the Medical Scholars Program (MSP) and is jointly sponsored by the MBA Program at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Urbana-Champaign. All medical and MBA training takes place on the Urbana-Champaign campus. Students enrolled in this innovative program will earn an MBA degree and the Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree. MD/MBA students plan to pursue a variety of careers, especially in academic medicine, public policy, governmental regulation, and/or health care administration. Eligibility The MD/MBA program is open to students who have completed an accredited bachelor‘s degree and who meet the admission criteria of the MBA Program, the College of Medicine, and the Medical Scholars Program. This joint degree program is available only to U.S. citizens and U.S. permanent residents. Sequencing of Studies Students enrolled in the MD/MBA program take an average of five to six years, including summers, to complete both degrees. The first year of the program is spent meeting the requirements of the MBA program. Admission to the MD/MBA Joint Degree Program MBA Program: The MBA Program requires that applicants to the MD/MBA curriculum submit the MBA application online at: https://www3.business.uiuc.edu/MBA_Application/index.asp The College of Medicine: Applicants must submit an AMCAS application and designate that the application be sent to the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine (Code #128) by Thursday, December 31, 2009. The Medical Scholars Program: Applicants must submit the official MSP application by Thursday, December 31, 2009, including three letters of recommendation, official transcripts for all previous undergraduate or graduate study institutions, and a copy of GMAT and MCAT scores. All admissions materials should be sent directly to the MSP at this address: Funding Opportunities While MD/MBA students are officially enrolled in the MBA Program, they are not eligible for a tuition and fee waiver. However, applicants may be eligible for partial MBA scholarships, depending on their academic qualifications. For the MBA portion of the MD/MBA program, applicants who apply prior to December 15 are automatically considered for scholarships. While officially enrolled in the College of Medicine, MSP MD/MBA students are eligible to earn a tuition and fee waiver provided they have a 25%-time or greater appointment (a graduate assistantship) on the UIUC campus, or an equivalent fellowship. The MSP does not guarantee the availability of assistantships or waivers to MD/MBA students, although every effort is made to help students obtain these assistantships and most students have obtained assistantships during a portion of their MD training.
