What is a Clinical Vignette?

A clinical vignette is a short (five-minute) oral and visual presentation that contains one or more of the following elements:

  • An unusual presentation or manifestation of a disease
  • Characteristics of an unusual disease
  • A pitfall in the usual clinical problem-solving process
  • New information about a disease
  • Surprise because of an unusual characteristic of the case

The purpose of the presentation is to make one or two teaching points and drive those home. A 300-400 word abstract is required. A sample vignette abstract can be found here.

Once you have identified a case, review the literature, defend your thinking
and/or reinforce the importance of the case. You need to get final approval
from a faculty member, who will be the second author.
