Dear 2008 College of Medicine Research Symposium Student Speaker:
Thank you for your willingness to present at the College of Medicine Research
Symposium on Thursday, April 17th. Here is a link to the schedule of events:
http://www.med.illinois.edu/sa/Events/Symposium/schedule.php
The Research Symposium is about 6 weeks away and the submission deadline to
receive the information we need from you for the program is Wednesday, April
2! We would appreciate receiving the following information by the deadline:
Complete and submit this form at
http://www.med.illinois.edu/sa/Events/Symposium/SpeakerInfoForm.php
by Wednesday, April 2 . We will need the title of your presentation, an abstract
of your presentation, a brief biographical sketch, a picture for us to include in
the program, your advisor and whether he/she will be introducing you at the
Research Symposium, your A/V needs. In particular, for A/V, what operating
system and application will you be using? We want to make sure that we have
the compatible equipment for you. In addition, please contact me ASAP if you
need your picture taken. I realize that you are very busy so we especially
appreciate your time and efforts in getting this information to us by the
deadline. Remember that you will also need to register for the symposium at
http://www.med.illinois.edu/sa/Events/Symposium/registration.php
We are planning on holding a brief rehearsal the week before the Research
Symposium. We will provide the details of this rehearsal closer to the date. We
ask that you please participate in this rehearsal to give you an opportunity to
practice and receive feedback from some of your colleagues, to test A/V to
make sure that software and such is compatible and to overall make sure things
run smoothly. We will ask that you submit your presentation no later than
Tuesday April 15th to our A/V chair so that he can load it on his laptop to have
ready in time for presentations on Thursday.
Just a reminder that you will need to present a 10 minute talk on your research.
Your talk will be followed by a 5 minute Q&A session. Because your talk is
limited to only 10 minutes, you should plan on presenting only 3-4 main points.
A good rule of thumb is 30 sec intro, 2-3 min. per main point, 30 sec
conclusion. When you present your slides another good rule of thumb is
generally to keep to 2 minutes per slide. We thank you in advance for honoring
your time limit.
As you prepare your presentation, please remember that your audience is a very
diverse group of people, many of whom are clinically focused. Your goal is for
ALL members of your audience to walk away thinking, "That was a great talk!"
The following criteria will be considered when evaluating your presentation:
clarity of presentation (content and delivery), use of visual aids, creativity, take
home message, clinical application and overall oral presentation. It will be
important for you to EXPLICITLY STATE at the beginning of your presentation
why your research is important and why the audience should care about
listening to you discuss your topic for the next 10 minutes. It will be important
to seek audience engagement and interest from the very beginning of your
presentation.
As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please contact me at
repella@illinois.edu. We are looking forward to your excellent presentation this
year!
Sincerely,
Tana Repella
