The HERMES Clinic

Overview

As volunteers, students in the College of Medicine provide an essential service to those in the community most in need of primary medical services. They do this through the student-run free clinic known as HeRMES. The name stands for Helping Revitalize Medical Education through Service and is based on an innovative “clinic-within-a-clinic” partnership with other area health clinics that also serve the uninsured and medically underserved of the east central Illinois region. The clinic was established as part of a response by the College’s students and the localcommunity to meet the needs of the growing population of uninsured patients.

By partnering with existing community clinics, HeRMES leverages the abilities of its volunteers to maximize the services they give, while furthering the goals of the collaborating clinics. HeRMES is operated entirely by medical students with its medical supervision provided by College of Medicine faculty who are also volunteering their time and skills.
