Author’s Note: The Office of Advancement is proud to profile, through a series of short articles, College of Medicine faculty members who have received various grants, awards and special distinctions during the 2011-2012 school year for professionalism, dedication and achievements in their respective fields of science and medicine.
Batlagundu Lakshminarayan, M.D., Clinical Assistant Professor of Internal Medicine
Awarded “Internal Medicine Residency Program Teaching Award” for Provena
Every year, all internal medicine residents select one faculty member from both Carle and Provena Hospitals to receive the Teaching Award as recognition for his or her contribution and dedication to the residency programs. Dr. Lakshminarayan is no stranger to the award.
“This year I was not that surprised because last year was a total surprise when they gave it to me,” he said of his reaction to the news. “My thought was the residents, probably because I’m involved with residency as a teacher and site director, would select me. But I’m happy.”
Dr. Lakshminarayn believes teaching medicine fulfills him in ways practicing cannot. He even claims, “Teaching is much better than practicing.”
“Practicing, you’re working hard, and I enjoy that, but teaching shapes lives,” he said of the two duties. “However busy you are, you reach a point where [practicing] doesn’t excite you as much as it did in the beginning. The satisfaction of breaking down and explaining complex subjects is immense and exciting.”
For Dr. Lakshminarayan, the excitement of teaching never fades. Having his assumptions of medicine challenged by the residents is the “best part” of working with them.
“The most prestigious award when I was a resident was the teaching award. It was a top notch prize to receive it,” he said in appreciation for winning. “Out of all of the awards in my life, it’s probably one of the best I’ve ever had.”
