Faculty Accolades Series: Dr. James Slauch
Thursday, October 27th, 2011

Author’s Note: The Office of Advancement is proud to profile, through a series of short articles, College of Medicine faculty members who have received various grants, awards and special distinctions during the 2011-2012 school year for professionalism, dedication and achievements in their respective fields of science and medicine.

Jim Slauch, Ph.D., Professor of Microbiology & Director of Medical Scholars Program

Elected Academy Fellow to American Academy of Microbiology

Named University Scholar

Professor Slauch had a busy summer.

In May he attended an awards luncheon in New Orleans in honor of his peer-elected appointment to the American Academy of Microbiology, a nod to his research on the pathogenic contamination of salmonella.

“The people at this lunch… I knew who they were and they are very famous microbiologists,” he said. “So it was clearly an honor to be included. I am very humbled by the concept that my peers have recognized me for my work.”

Soon after that he received a letter from the chancellor notifying him of his appointment as one of only six University Scholars. The appointment recognizes faculty for their work in education, research and service. More importantly, the distinction comes with a 3-year, $10,000 grant to further the careers of the appointees – and Professor Slauch already has ideas on what the award will allow him to do.

“I have a professor from Israel who specialized in yersinia (a bacteria of a similar strain to salmonella). [He] is going to come here on sabbatical and spend a couple of years in my lab,” Slauch clarified. “So that will be very exciting.”

Professor Slauch’s enthusiasm for both aspects of his work is clear in his conversation.

“Research and teaching are very much tied together. The thing about doing research here at the University of Illinois is that we are training graduates to be leaders in their fields, and that’s one of the reasons I came here,” he explained. “Research is teaching. The two are very intimately connected.”

With such a dichotomous approach, it is easy to see why Professor Slauch has been recognized for his successes – both at the university and beyond.
