Policy on Medical License for Residents

PURPOSE: To ensure that all residents have an active medical license.

POLICY:
All residents at University of Illinois College of Medicine at Urbana-Champaign (UICOM-UC) training programs are required to have an active medical license to practice at each participating site.

Temporary medical licenses are issued to the Program and not to the residents; therefore, it is the Program’s responsibility to ensure an active medical license for each resident is on file during their tenure resident training. Residents cannot practice until they have been issued a medical license. In the event extension of license is needed (due to late arrival or extension of training), it is the Program’s responsibility to coordinates license extension application.

If the resident physician is issued a permanent medical license in the State of Illinois, the temporary medical license becomes void.  It is then the responsibility of the resident to provide the Program with a copy of his/her permanent license from the State of Illinois.
