Department of Internal Medicine
Welcome to the Department of Medicine at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign College of Medicine. Our goal is to provide the highest quality education for our students and residents, to provide a stimulating academic environment to support trainee and faculty basic science and clinical research and professional growth, and to promote outstanding, compassionate care of our patients. The field of internal medicine provides one of the most intellectually satisfying and fulfilling careers in all of medicine, with numerous options and potential career paths. These career paths are all based on the care of complex patients, requiring an in-depth understanding and application of the basic sciences and pathophysiologic principles.
Internists serve their patients by providing clinical care, performing clinical or basic science research, or both, in all of the following domains: general internal medicine (which provides the opportunity to establish long term relationships with patients and their families), hospital medicine, multiple subspecialties including geriatrics & palliative care, hematology & oncology, infectious disease, and endocrinology, as well as more procedural oriented specialties such as cardiology, pulmonary-critical care, nephrology, and gastroenterology, information technology, the emerging field of genetics, international medicine and global health, and medical education. In our program, like those nationwide, percentage-wise, internists provide more education than any other medical specialty. Our Department prides itself on its exceptional volunteer physician clinical faculty and its basic science faculty is second to none. The Department’s collaboration with our community’s clinical partners— Carle Physicians Group , Christie Clinic, Illiana Veterans’ Administration Hospital, and Presence Health Medical Center—ensures a diverse and well-rounded clinical experience for our students and residents. The Department of Medicine’s commitment to academic excellence supports a creative and stimulating environment for our faculty and trainees. If you are a prospective medical student, medical resident, or faculty member, please contact us—our department can help you maximize your potential and reach your professional goals. We look forward to meeting you. With our best wishes,
