In order to receive a passing grade for the Medicine I Clerkship, the student must:

1. Successfully complete all clerkship requirements

AND

2.  Receive a score on the National Board examination that is above the passing threshold set by the four-site University of Illinois College of Medicine.  This threshold varies from year to year based on the national mean scores for that year.

The clinical clerkship grade is determined by the Clerkship Directors, with input from supervising faculty and residents, and is based on the following criteria:

1. All required patient write-ups and the Medicine I Core Clerkship Patient Problems and Required Procedures checklist will be submitted by the designated due dates or the student will not be eligible for the grade of Outstanding in the clinical portion of the Medicine I Clerkship.

2. According to University of Illinois College of Medicine policy, in order to achieve a final grade of Outstanding, students must score at least at the national mean on the NBME exam. This currently is 74.

Potential Clerkship Grades:

Passing:         “Outstanding” (O) , “Advanced” (ADV), or  “Proficient” (PROF)

Not Passing:   “Unsatisfactory" (U)

Temporary:    “Incomplete" (INC) ”

“Incomplete” or (INC) will be awarded to a student if all requirements are not met by the conclusion of the clerkship due to illness or other extenuating non-academic circumstances. Also, if a student does not meet the specified departmental passing level on the NBME Subject Exam, the student will receive the grade of "Incomplete" or (INC) and will be informed by the department by what date they must retake the exam.
