PURPOSE:  To ensure resident compliance with established duty hours, and reporting. The program uses various resources to monitor compliance with duty hour standards. Evaluation questions, surveys, and direct questioning are among the tools. In addition, the Graduate Medical Education Committee (GMEC) of the College of Medicine surveys residents and offers resident feedback meetings. The GMEC reports any possible rule violations to the program. Resident duty hour logging assists the program to protect resident training and be rapidly notified of possible duty hour violations.

POLICY:  Residents must log duty hours in a timely manner.

PROCEDURES:

  1. Residents are expected to log duty hours daily. Residents are to be up to date in duty hours reporting by the last day of each rotation. A report can be generated at any time to ascertain which residents are delinquent.
  1. Residents found to be in non-compliance will receive an email instruction to complete logs.
  1. Residents found to be non-compliant will be temporarily suspended at a time chosen by the program. The resident will remain suspended until duty hours reporting is completed.  The period of suspension will be counted against the total leave available to the resident for the given academic year.
  1. Reports on duty hours are reviewed at the Residency Progress and Promotions Committee (RPPC) meeting.
