 PURPOSE:To assure acquisition of the professional knowledge, skills and attitudes that characterize the practice of the medical specialty of Internal Medicine. This goal is facilitated in largest part by maintaining a post-graduate medical education program that at a minimum meets the accreditation requirements of The Accreditation Council on Graduate Medical Education.

The program provides three curricular pathways to promote achievement of the principal goal:

Primary Care Curriculum. For those whose career goal is the practice of general internal medicine in the community setting.
Traditional Curriculum. For those requiring competence in the specialty of internal medicine in preparation for additional training in a subspecialty of internal medicine.
Academic Curriculum. For those pursuing an academic career.

The residency program endorses the mission of its sponsoring institutions and promulgates these through its post-graduate training program. These include a commitment to high quality public service, maintenance of a scholarly environment, which facilitates other educational programs of the college and the demonstration of fiscal responsibility.

The candidate for certification by this program must demonstrate the following qualities:

Patient Services:
The Program requires candidates for certification to demonstrate a high quality of service to the public characterized by:
Unconditional positive regard for the individual welfare.
Patient services characterized by the qualities of availability, humanism and cost sensitivity.
Ability to work efficiently with other health care providers to coordinate health and wellness services.
Professional Characteristics:
Candidates must model behavior illustrating the highest standard of professional ethics and personal conduct.
Scholarly Attributes:
A scholarly attitude defined by sustained self-directed learning, scientific inquiry and intellectual honesty is essential.
Institutional Commitment:
The candidate must promulgate the mission of sponsoring institutions and comply with all institutional policies and procedures.
Clinical Competence:
Clinical competence must be demonstrated in the following categories:
Patient Care
Medical Knowledge
Procedural Skills
Practice-Based Learning and Improvement
  Interpersonal and Communication Skills
  Professional Attitudes and Behavior
Systems-Based Practice
Clinical Teaching
Certification:
The program expects all candidates to achieve certification in the specialty of internal medicine awarded by the American Board of Internal Medicine.
