Internal Medicine Residency Program
Program Information for Applicants & Visitors
The mission of this program is to prepare resident physicians with the knowledge, skills and attitudes requisite to patient care in internal medicine. Emphasis is on the humane application of scientific knowledge; preparing our graduates to acquire new knowledge and skills through lifelong self-directed learning; the cost effective utilization of public resources; the responsiveness to needs of individuals and the community; and the highest standards of academic excellence and professional ethics.
There are three training sites in the Internal Medicine Residency Program. The sites are Carle Foundation Hospital, Provena Covenant Medical Center, and VA Illiana Healthcare System. Carle Foundation Hospital is a 295-bed JCAHO-accredited regional care hospital located in Urbana, Illinois. A not-for-profit hospital, it was ranked a Top 100 Cardiovascular Hospital by Solucient. The hospital is closely affiliated with Carle Clinic, one of the largest private physician groups in the United States. Provena Covenant Medical Center (PCMC) is a 288-bed JCAHO-accredited medical facility with a rich history in the Champaign-Urbana community. It has the area's largest rehabilitation center, featuring facilities for physical, occupational and speech therapy. They also have a hospital-based skilled nursing unit designed to help patients integrate more effectively and prepare for going home. PCMC is affiliated with Christie Clinic, one of the largest physician-owned, multi-specialty group medical practices in Illinois. VA Illiana Healthcare System provides primary, secondary, intermediate medical and surgical care, acute/extended psychiatric care, extended long-term care, and skilled nursing home care to in central Illinois and west central Indiana. There are 415 authorized beds including 241 nursing home beds in the facility.
