Internal Medicine Residency Program

Program Policy

Subject: Education Environment

Category:  Moonlighting

Scope:  Program

Effective Date: 4/27/2000

Revised: 01/13/2006

Approved: 01/13/2006

PURPOSE:     To assure an environment which balances learning and service, and protects patient safety and physician well-being.

POLICY:       Moonlighting is not a requirement of the Residency Program.

Moonlighting is after hours professional care activity that is not a part of a written curriculum and is independent of the residency program.  Also included in this category are after hours professional activities that are described as curricula but are elective and for which residents receive compensation beyond the usual resident stipend, Residency Sponsored Volunteer Programs.

Moonlighting is limited to junior and senior residents in good standing with the advance permission of the program director.  Resident moonlighting hours must be reported to the porgram director and when combined with residency duty hours may not exceed 80 hours per week.  At no time may moonlighting interfere with residency duties.

Moonlighting activity will not be approved by the program director if in the opinion of the residency progress and promotions committee, it appears to interfere with resident progress in the program.

PROCEDURES:

  1. The resident must request permission for moonlighting in advance and report hours to the program director monthly.  Residency Sponsored Volunteer Programs activities are assigned by the program.
  2. It is the responsibility of the resident to assure that licensing and liability insurance are appropriate for work outside the residency program.
  3. Withdrawal of moonlighting privileges of the program may be appealed by the resident through the appeal process of the program.
