        Fundamental Clinical Problems (FCP)

Goal: To discuss and recognize the medical condition of hypertension

Lecture Objectives:

  1. The student shall be able to understand the epidemiology of hypertension.
  2. The student shall be able to distinguish the history and physical findings for hypertension.
  3. The student shall be able to list the predisposing factors for hypertension.
  4. The student shall be able to recognize additional testing or imaging necessary for the management of hypertension.
  5. The student shall understand the basic treatments for hypertension.

Goal: To discuss and recognize the medical condition of hepatitis

Lecture Objectives:

  1. The student shall be able to note the definition, epidemiology and classification of hepatitis.
  2. The student shall be able to discuss the pathology, risk factors, history, clinical presentation, laboratory findings, and management associated with alcoholic liver disease, drug-induced liver disease, and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.
  3. The student shall be able to describe and distinguish among all the viral hepatitides (Hepatitis A, B, C, D, and E), and understand the routes of transmission, time course of infection, markers of infectivity, diagnostic tests, history, clinical presentation, extrahepatic manifestations, prognosis, and management options for each.

Goal: To discuss the evolution of infectious disease from the beginning to current day practices, and to recognize and discuss the implications of fever in a patient.

Lecture Objectives:

  1. The student shall be able to understand the physiology behind fever.
  2. The student shall be able to distinguish the history and physical findings associated with fever.
  3. The student shall be able to list the predisposing factors for fever.
  4. The student shall be able to recognize additional testing or imaging necessary for the management of fever.
  5. The student shall understand the basic treatments for fever.

Goal: To understand the epidemiology, pathogenesis, treatment options, and complications of the major types of stroke.

Lecture Objectives:

  1. The student shall become familiar with the incidence and prevalence of CVAs as well as disability and mortality rates associated with CVAs.
  2. The student shall be able to understand the anatomy of the brain, and the blood supply to the anterior and posterior circulation.
  3. The student shall be able to understand major classifications of strokes (ischemic and hemorrhagic) and understand the predisposing factors, pathogenesis and clinical manifestations of each.
  4. The student shall be able to discuss various management options for CVAs and complications associated with treatment.
  5. The student shall be able to describe common neurological, pulmonary, cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, musculoskeletal, and psychosocial complications which may arise from CVAs.

Goal: To understand and recognize the medical conditions of various cancers

Lecture Objectives:

  1. The student shall be able to understand the epidemiology, pathology, clinical manifestations, diagnosis and work-up, staging, and treatment of all major cancers.
  2. The student shall be able to understand general guidelines used in cancer staging and become familiar with the TNM staging system as well as histological grading and performance status systems.
  3. The student shall become familiar with cancer statistics describing incidence and mortality of common cancers in both the United States and globally.
  4. The student shall be able to understand appropriateness, advantages and disadvantages of various cancer treatment modalities such as surgery, radiation, cytotoxic drugs, immunotherapy, herbal therapy, etc.
  5. The student shall be able to appreciate the importance of delivering empathic, kind and respectful care-giving to the oncologic patient.
  6. The student shall be able to the understand mechanism and treatments for various paraneoplastic syndromes, as well as mechanical and metabolic oncological emergencies (compression syndromes, tumor lysis syndrome, electrolyte imbalances, etc).
  7. The student shall be able to describe various types of pain associates with cancer, and understand fundamental concepts involved in symptom management.
  8. The student shall be able to define the term tumor marker, as well as recognize the main markers associated with common cancers.

Goal: To discuss and recognize lung physiology, pulmonary function tests and blood gases

Lecture Objectives:

  1. The student shall be able to understand basic lung physiology.
  2. The student shall be able to recognize the application and results of pulmonary function tests.
  3. The student shall be able to recognize the etiologies and clinical manifestations of metabolic acidosis and alkalosis, and respiratory acidosis and alkalosis.
  4. The student shall demonstrate the way to approach an acid-base imbalance in a patient.

Goal: To discuss and recognize the medical condition of acute renal failure

Lecture Objectives:

  1. The student shall be able to understand the epidemiology of acute renal failure.
  2. The student shall be able to distinguish the history and physical findings for acute renal failure.
  3. The student shall be able to list the predisposing factors for acute renal failure.
  4. The student shall be able to recognize additional testing or imaging necessary for the management of acute renal failure.
  5. The student shall understand the basic treatments for acute renal failure.

Goal: To discuss and recognize the medical conditions of rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, and crystal-induced arthritis

Lecture Objectives:

  1. The student shall be able to understand the epidemiology of rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, and crystal-induced arthritis.
  2. The student shall be able to distinguish the history and physical findings for rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, and crystal-induced arthritis.
  3. The student shall be able to list the predisposing factors for rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, and crystal-induced arthritis.
  4. The student shall be able to recognize additional testing or imaging necessary for the management of rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, and crystal-induced arthritis
