2009 Research Symposium

Thursday, April 23, 2009

Hilton Gardens Conference Center, Champaign, IL
9:00 AM to 6:00 PM

Description of Sessions

All Sessions 10:00-11:15 a.m.

Session 1: Clinical Connexions
A clinical vignette will be presented in detail. The presentation will be punctuated by a commentary of the underlying pathphysiology thereby providing a real-time connection between basic and clinical medicine. This is a great opportunity for medical students to understand the anatomy of a case report as current students will help to present portions of the case at different learning levels. We hope this session will aid in understanding the clinical vignettes during the plenary session. MSP, M1 to M4 students encouraged to attend

Session 2: Primarily Research
Primary Care Residency Programs and Research Opportunities
This presentation will briefly describe current research projects in the Family Medicine Residency Program, Internal Medicine Residency Program and the Geriatrics Fellowship. The goal of this presentation is to illustrate the variety and breadth of clinical research in the primary care arena. Presentations will describe on-going research relating to: quality improvement projects, community oriented primary care, answers to clinical questions for clinical journals, and resident improvement projects and other research activities.  This session is facilitated by Bharat Gopal  MD, Program Director, FMRP and Nancy F. Barrett EdD, Graduate Medical Education Department.

Session 3: Panel on Health Disparities
The 2002 IOM report Unequal Treatment provided evidence of continued health disparities experienced by different segments of the population. Seven years later, there is evidence ot suggest that many of these disparities continue to exist. This panel will discuss why those disaprities still occur and what obstacles we face in overcoming them.

Panelist--
Dr. Simone Hampton, Francis Nelson Health Center and Carle Foundation Hospital
Dr. Diana Grigsby-Toussaint, Asst. Professor, Department of Kinesiology and Community Health
Jeff Trask, Champaign Christian Health Coalition

Session 4: From Molecule to Marketing: Drug Development
Paul Hergenrother, PhD, Associate Professor in Chemistry, University of Illinois. Dr. Hergenrother's research includes the use of small organic compounds to identify novel cellular targets that can be exploited in the treatment of diseases including cancer, neurodegeneration, and drug-resistant bacteria. In addition, his research team works closely with the local medical community and performs tests directly on patient samples. He will speak on the topic of "Procaspase Activation as an Anti-Cancer Strategy: Discovery, Mechanism of Action, and a Phase I Clinical Trial of the Compound PAC-1".
