Welcome to the Physicians for Social Responsibility (PSR) at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.  At the national level, PSR works for the improvement of public health and safety in three main forums:

  1. Nuclear Weapon Proliferation
  2. Environmental Degradation
  3. Gun Violence

In 1985, the Nobel Committee awarded PSR the Nobel Peace Prize for years of service to world peace, especially in their efforts to have a nuclear test-ban treaty signed.  If you are interested in more information from our parent organization, please visit www.psr.org.

Here in Urbana-Champaign, our chapter of PSR focuses on the core issues of gun violence and the environment.  We sponsor an annual talk by Dr. Uretz Oliphant, Chief of Surgery at Carle Clinic, on the public health effects of gun violence and also organize opportunities at which people in the community can trade mercury and alcohol thermometers for digital devices.  Furthermore, we try to sponsor other seminars, panels, and talks that address the issues and challenges in public health today.  Ultimately, our goal is to provide a forum through which all medical students at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign can become more socially aware.

We also extend the pledge of becoming socially responsible physicians by providing monetary contributions to Frances Nelson Clinic, the primary clinic for the underserved community in the Urbana-Champaign area.  To date, we have raised $?? for Frances Nelson, and we are currently trying to raise money to donate a large piece of medical equipment for the clinic.

This year, we hope to expand the amount of service opportunities for all medical students here in Urbana-Champaign, as well as improve the relationship between the medical community and the community at large.

Thank you for your interest in PSR.  If you would like to become an active part of our organization, please visit our contacts page for a link to my e-mail.

Sincerely,

James Wrzosek
President of PSR at UICOM 2006-2007
