Basic Science Subcommittee (Student Representative Andy Hall):
We are discussing with professors the implementation of an audio library (web/podcasting) for the M1 class. Be aware that even if the faculty decides to go ahead with the idea, implementation will likely not be until next year (as in AFTER our M1 class is gone) because there is a lot that has to happen from the IT side.
In February, an expert (John Ory) will be holding a seminar for the M1 faculty on how to write more applicable USMLE-style questions for our exams. Most faculty seemed to support his cause.
The white coat ceremony for the M2s in Champaign-Urbana is on January 4th, 2008. It would be much appreciated if students in town at that time would come and support their fellow classmates and colleagues. Refreshments are likely to be provided, and it is a very nice and elaborate ceremony that one of the faculty will lead.
Many students’ concerns were brought before the committee such as extending the time per question on certain subject exams. These times are fixed in an effort to be analogous to the board exams – thus, changes are unlikely.
The suggestion was made to the professors to allow us to see our exams after they are graded. There was not enough support within the faculty for this action. However, certain professors are willing to go over exams with students individually. Dr. Williams mentioned the possibility of creating a post-exam session where students could see whichever tests they would like and review the questions they got wrong within a restricted time window. Like the Histology and Biochemistry questions, each answer choice would have a brief explanation.
It was further suggested that online practice problems be given for more subjects similar to those given by our Biochemistry professors. Most of the faculty said they would put it under consideration.
General Updates for Student Government:
Many of you are not aware of what is going on with your Student Government.
