        Medical Imaging

Goal: To become oriented to different forms of medical imaging

Lecture Objectives:

The student should be able to describe the role of radiology in diagnosis and treatment of various patients.

The student should be able to understand different imaging modalities and subspecialties within radiology.

The student should be able to compare the radiation exposure and cost differences between various imaging modalities.

Goal: To expose the students to different forms of neuroradiology

Lecture Objectives:

The student shall describe the radiologic findings for various intracranial hemorrhages.

The student shall demonstrate knowledge of the location of M1 normal neuroanatomy.

The student shall appreciate the imaging appearance of commonly encountered neuropathologic processes.

Goal: To gain familiarity with imaging of the abdomen and pelvis

Lecture Objectives:

The student shall describe the various modalities used for abdominal and pelvic imaging.

The students shall demonstrate an understanding of basic principles of CT imaging, with and without contrast.

The student shall highlight commonly encountered normal limits of abdominal organ appearance on CT and Abdominal X-ray.

Goal: To gain familiarity with imaging of the abdomen and pelvis

Lecture Objectives:

The student shall recognize the normal cross sectional imaging of Abdomen with CT and MRI.

The student shall describe the imaging appearance of commonly encountered pathologies in the Abdomen.

The student shall describe the best imaging modalities for detection of various intra-abdominal pathologies.

Goal: To gain familiarity with imaging of the thorax

Lecture Objectives:

The student shall become familiar with normal imaging anatomy of the chest.

The student shall become familiar with different modalities used in chest imaging.

The student shall learn the typical imaging appearance of commonly encountered chest pathology.

Goal: To gain familiarity with musculoskeletal imaging

Lecture Objectives:

The student shall differentiate between the different imaging modalities for MSK.

The student shall appreciate the imaging appearance of commonly encountered MSK processes.

The student shall describe the MRI and its use in MSK imaging.

Goal: To gain familiarity with nuclear medicine imaging

Lecture Objectives:

The student shall differentiate between the different tracers used in Nuclear Medicine.

The student shall appreciate which Nuclear Medicine studies should be ordered for which suspected pathologies.

The student shall describe the various Nuclear Medicine modalities, such as PET/CT and their applications/limitations.

Goal: To gain familiarity with women’s imaging

Lecture Objectives:

The student shall be able to review breast pathology.

The student shall describe the various modalities for imaging breast pathology based on initial clinical finding/suspicion.

The student shall describe the use of U/S in women’s imaging and differentiating simple vs. complex cystic pathologies.

Goal: To gain familiarity with vascular and interventional imaging

Lecture Objectives:

The student shall learn normal angiographic vascular anatomy.

The student shall become familiar with interventional vascular techniques such as angioplasty and vascular stenting.

The student shall become familiar with non-vascular intervention radiology procedures such as image-guided biopsy, biliary procedures and drainage procedures.

The student shall become familiar with non-invasive vascular imaging:  CT angiography, MR angiography and vascular ultrasound.

Goal: To gain familiarity with a variety of medical imaging by participating in a nine station workshop

Lecture Objectives:

The student shall review various cases in groups of 2-3 and identifying major imaging findings for each case.

The student shall locate and review suspected findings with an attending radiologist.

The student shall practice interpretation of different imaging modalities such as plain x-ray, MRI, CT and U/S through hands-on experience.
