Medical Information Science
Department of Medical Information Science
Effective September 16, 2005, Bruce Schatz has become the new Head of the Department. It has been empty since the retirement of Nobel Laureate Paul Lauterbur.
Professor Schatz has been at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign since 1993. He transfers from the Graduate School of Library and Information Science, and will continue to hold zero-time appointments there as well as in Computer Science, Neuroscience, and Biomedical and Health Information Sciences (UIC). He is also Director of the CANIS Laboratory (Community Architectures for Network Information Systems), a campus-wide Research Resource. He is Resident Faculty at the Institute for Genomic Biology, Affiliate Faculty at the Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology, and Senior Research Scientist at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA).
The transfer is part of the campus-wide Translational Research initiative, intended to catalyze the use of biomedical science in health care applications. The faculty line is provided by the new Institute for Genomic Biology, which is hosting the BeeSpace project on which Schatz serves as principal investigator, with $5M from NSF Frontiers in Integrative Biological Research program.
Professor Schatz will be planning a reinvigoration of the department to help make UIUC nationally prominent in biomedical informatics. In this role, he will work collaboratively with units across campus on issues in informatics research and education. He is currently writing a white paper to provide a master plan for the Department and the University in medical informatics and healthcare infrastructure.
