Login Instructions: UI College of Medicine Students at the Urbana Campus

The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996, known as “HIPAA” was created to protect information related to individual patient health care. One stipulation of HIPAA is that all employees and trainees of health providers participate in a regular review of HIPAA regulations. In order to comply with this requirement, the UI College of Medicine has developed a short online course that you must complete this year. The course should take no more than 1-2 hours. All medical students are required to take this course. Please note that students who fail to complete the HIPAA training course will be prohibited from any clerkships or other clinical training until they have met this requirement. Our hospital sites are aware of the HIPAA law and will also enforce this rule.

In order to participate in the HIPAA training program, you will need a computer with Internet access and your UI Net ID. Speakers are recommended but not required. When you are ready to log in and complete your “Prepare for Privacy” course, open your browser and go to:

When you click “Prepare for Privacy Login,” a network login screen will open. Type in your UIUC email address (you have to use your entire email address e.g. - johndoe@illinois.edu) and your common password (the same one you use to access your UIUC email account.) Once you are logged in, a screen will appear listing the courses to which you have been assigned. Choose the first course not shown as completed. The next screen will give you the option to select either an audio or non-audio version of the course. In either case, you will need to have the Macromedia Flash Player installed on your computer system. Instructions for downloading the free player are provided during the login process.

If you have already completed a previous version of the Prepare for Privacy course, you may remember that you had to create your own personal Prepare for Privacy account using a special registration code. These special accounts are no longer necessary. Your previous account information and course completion record has been included in your current account that you will access using your UIUC email account and common password. We hope this makes it easier for you to access the course materials.

Your administrator may require documentation of your participation in the HIPAA privacy training program. Once you have completed the “Prepare for Privacy” course, return to the course selection screen and choose “Get Certificate of Participation” from the options list. A printable certificate will display in a new window.

Should you encounter any technical difficulties participating in the course, call the Prepare for Privacy Help Desk at 312-355-2949 or send email to help@prepareforprivacy.com.

Questions regarding student eligibility or participation in clerkships should be directed to the Student Affairs office.
