FCM-2

Small Group Sessions

Facilitated by an FCM-2 Core Faculty member that is a practicing physician, the groups will consist of 5-6 M2 students, and be developed based on diversity of gender, educational background, and ethnicity. Students will remain within their assigned Small Group for the entire academic year, learning to work together to problem solve and grow as clinicians and individuals. Small Group sessions will coincide with the pathophysiology schedule to:

  • enhance the understanding of the topic
  • practice relevant history-taking and physical examination skills, documentation and presentation skills; and
  • develop beginner skills in differential diagnosis
Additionally, discussions will occur on topics such as social determinants of health, health disparities, health literacy, societal issues that physicians face in-and-out of the workplace, and motivational interviewing. Small Group sessions require preparatory work using the required textbooks listed in the "Resources" section of this handbook. Students will be notified of these assigned readings in advance of the scheduled sessions, as listed on the academic calendar. Furthermore, much of the material covered will be cross-referenced with commonly used study material in preparation for USMLE Step 1.

Student expectations:

  • all sessions are mandator
  • read the assigned chapter(s) in advance of the session
  • participate in the discussion through Q&A, assist group members in the learning process, and learn from the opinions of others through respectful debate

Resources
  • textbooks (Symptom to Diagnosis, Patient Centered Interviewing, Bates, First Aid)
