Introduction to Clinical Medicine
To enhance the Clinical Medical Education Curriculum through the provision of selective learning opportunities, beyond the offered required clinical science topics.
The University of Illinois College of Medicine at Urbana includes a second year M-2 curriculum designed to assist students in the transition from the academic environment of preclinical training to the clinical medicine arena. The year has been designated as the Introduction to Clinical Medicine (ICM). The year consists of ten courses, including Pharmacology, Pathology, Epidemiology, History and Physical Diagnosis, Fundamental Clinical Problems, Clinical Tutorials, Clinical Laboratory Sciences, Clinical Microbiology, Medical Imaging and Psychiatry. The major purpose of the ICM year is to prepare students to begin and to participate successfully in the clinical clerkships. This is accomplished by requiring students to utilize their cumulative prior knowledge and experience, and by also introducing them to new skills and knowledge of the medical profession. The year is both a bridge and a transition to the clinical clerkship for the successful second year student.
The ICM year includes a survey of specific and important major medical and surgical problems. The depth and breadth of learning is focused specifically upon the level required by an entry level third year student. Knowledge is acquired through a problem-oriented interactive and cumulative educational process. The ICM year will serve to provide a bridge to allow a medical student who has learned basic medical science to function in a clinical environment.
An array of skills is learned by students throughout the year. Acquisition of these skills complement and extend the acquired knowledge base. Among the skills to be learned by the students include: history and physical examination skills, interpersonal and communication skills, small group interaction ability, interpretative skills, clinical problem solving, appropriate utilization of resources and a limited set of basic clinical-care skills.
The cumulative experience offered in the Introduction to Clinical Medicine will also allow the student to acquire attitudes appropriate for their work in clinical medicine. Students will gain an understanding and appreciation of the concept of a professional and the process of professionalization. Students will develop an attitude of learning where they assume the responsibility for overall learning. A positive and productive approach to the learning experience will be engendered.
GOAL AND METHODOLOGY
To provide information to clinical students participating in the clinical science curriculum that is not otherwise provided in the core clerkship. Potential content areas include:
- Multi-disciplinary topics
- Timely issues
- Skill sets and experiences beyond the novice clinical learner
- Practical and Interactive
- Evaluation of each learning topic
Primarily M3 and M4 students, but may expand to M2 students and residency participation depending on the topic.
The sessions will take place the final 2 days of each clerkship rotation.
An ad hoc steering committee will oversee the curriculum, chaired by Dr. Robert Kirby will include the following members: Dr. Terry Hatch, Dr. Sari Gilman Aronson, Dr. Uretz Oliphant, Dr. John Hill, Ron Brewer PhD, Evan Melhado PhD, and Richard Gumport, PhD as well as a 3rd and 4th year medical student. Nancy F. Barrett, EdD will provide staff support. Each exercise, or series or exercises, will be approved prospectively by clinical affairs.
There are 5 major goals of the ICC:
Students will learn to communicate appropriately in different clinical settings, understanding the appropriate breadth and depth of the communication with diverse health care professionals in both written and oral formats.
- Hospital Environments
Students will learn the institutional expectations and appropriate behaviors associated with each clinical teaching site. These may include procedures, administrative components and procedures, building upon the knowledge base learned in the second year.
- Survival Skills
Students will learn general facts, procedures and behaviors that will aid them in success during their clerkship training. Specifically discussed will be professionalism, wardsmanship and interaction with attendings, peers and other allied health professionals.
- Emergent Conditions by Specialty
Students will discuss with clinical discipline specialists the most common emergent patient presentations within each clinical specialty, understanding how each discipline approaches patient problems and understanding their role, as students, in each patient’s care.
- Advanced Topics
Students will expand their knowledge of specific topics previously identified as anxiety-producing for new clerks.
- Carle Champaign Clinic on South Mattis Avenue
Go south on Mattis avenue, about 2-3 blocks south of Kirby Avenue. The Clinic will be on the east side of Mattis.
Please park in the back of the clinic and enter through the back door. We'll either put up signs or have more explicit directions there for you to follow.
