Hyperplasia is an increase in the number of the cells in a tissue. The normal thyroid follicle has a smooth lining of a single layer of follicular cells. In this specimen, papillary infoldings of follicular cells covering central cores of connective tissue project into the lumen of the follicles. Contrast hyperplasia with hypertrophy.
