URBANA ATLAS OF PATHOLOGY

Image Number 106 - Heart, rheumatic fever, nodule

Rheumatic fever (RF) is diagnosed on the basis of satisfaction of some of the Jones criteria. Subcutaneous nodules are one of those criteria. This slide shows a typical nodule. The nodules are characterized histologically by the following: areas of fibrinoid necrosis, with a leukocytic infiltrate, highlighted by Aschoff giant cells. However, such cells are not seen at this magnification. Perhaps some of the large open cells seen in the mass of collagen in the center of the screen are Aschoff giant cells.
