URBANA ATLAS OF PATHOLOGY

Image Number 86 - Colon, adenocarcinoma, moderately well-differentiated

The glandular structures are lined by by a hyperplastic epithelium with the resultant piling up of cells. There is also cellular and nuclear pleomorphism, variation in cell and nuclear size, and prominent nucleoli. The gland like structures are in a back to back configuration without obvious intervening connective tissue. These are all characteristics of malignancy. There are also necrotic, exfoliated cells in the lumina of the glands. The lamina propria in the upper third of the screen is hypercellular with an inflammatory cell infiltrate.
