Image Number 87 - Colon, adenocarcinoma, gross

The colon has been opened to expose the mucosal surface. The large white area is an epithelial overgrowth called a polyp. It can be benign or malignant. A determination of malignancy reguires a biopsy for histological confirmation. The polyp is surrounded by black colored mucosa which is often referred to as melanosis coli. This is a benign condition and is commonly associated with chronic laxative use.
