Lung, ,pulmonary embolism, recent

In this specimen there is a dark red thrombo-embolus within the major branches of the pulmonary artery. The embolus is seen in the central region of the screen and has a triangular configuration due to the fact that it is occupying three of the main branches of the pulmonary artery.

95% of pulmonary emboli arise from the deep veins of the lower extremity. 70% are small in size in contrast to the less frequent large emboli that often result in sudden death.
