Polycystic kidney, adult type

This is a gross view of the external surface of a kidney from a patient with adult polycystic kidney disease (PKD). Note the multiple cysts . PKD is a an autosomal dominant disease that affects 1 in a 1000 in the general population. It is always bilateral. 40% of patients also have polycystic liver disease and 25 % have berry aneurysms of the cerebral vasculature.
