Image Number 103 - Mesentery, periappendiceal abscess

An abscess is a walled off area of suppurrative inflammation. The wall of the abscess is not lined by an epithelium, but is simply comprised of collagenous tissue around a ball of pus. Pus is composed of necrotic neutrophils. (Note that cysts are lined by an epithelium).
