Image Number 122 - Skin, dermatomyositis

Dermatomyositis is an autoimmune inflammatory disease of the muscles and skin which affects women twice as often as men. It is characterized by inflammation of the skin and the muscles with a resultant atrophy of both. This slide depicts the cutaneous lesion. Grossly the cutaneous lesion appears as a blotchy, erythematous rash involving the face, dorsal surfaces of the hands and feet, especially the knuckles. Histologically, large aggregates of leukocytes are present, especially seen in the upper right half of this slide. The left half of the slide is filled with a hyperemic area of dermis.
