This gross specimen highlights an arterial prosthesis. The aorta has been cut open longitudinally to expose its lumenal surface. The prosthesis is the corrugated white surface seen running horizontally across the middle 1/3 of the field. Such surgical repair is usually only attempted when the aneurysm is greater than 6 cm in diameter, at which point the risk of rupture is 50 % over the ensuing 10 years.
